John Calzavara BIO BANNER.jpg

John Calzavara (also known as John Calz or JohnCalz) is a versatile saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and studio owner based in the Greater Nashville area (Smyrna, Tennessee).

A skilled performer on saxophone (primarily soprano and tenor), guitar, pedal steel, dobro, banjo, and bass, Calzavara has built a respected career as a sideman and collaborator in the Nashville music scene. His live and recording credits include work with notable artists such as Ronnie McDowell, Paul Brandt, Brady Seals, Rebecca Lynn Howard, Billy Dean, Gary Allan, Josh Turner, and many others.

He is the owner and operator of Path III Studios (also referred to as Path 3 Studio) in Smyrna, TN, where he has produced, engineered, and mixed a wide range of projects spanning funk, pop, country, and especially smooth jazz since around 2000.

As a solo artist, Calzavara (under the name John Calz) has released smooth jazz albums and EPs, including Cosmic Wave (2013) and the Window of My Soul series (with releases like First Look and 2nd Look in 2023). His original compositions often reflect themes of joy, sorrow, hope, and life’s deeper reflections—many created or completed during the reflective period of the pandemic. He plays multiple instruments on his recordings (saxophones, guitars, pedal steel, keyboards, programming) and frequently collaborates with musicians like drummer Tom Hoey, cellist Adriana Calzavara, and others. His music is available on major streaming platforms, and he has performed in the Nashville area, including jazz events at venues like St. Ignatius Catholic Church.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Calzavara has been involved in the community, including as a deacon with the Diocese of Nashville, and he maintains an active presence through his social media, and local performances.

Known for his soulful, grooving smooth jazz style and thoughtful multi-instrumental approach, John Calzavara continues to create, produce, and perform music that connects with listeners across genres.

"Brass doesn’t lie. You can't hide behind effects pedals or volume knobs—it’s just my breath, a reed, and pure emotion."
